Tour Door County: Jacksonport
Jacksonport, located just north of Sturgeon Bay, prides itself on being on the quiet side of Door County. It offers a place to slow down and really enjoy the scenery.
Home to Cave Point and Whitefish Dunes, Jacksonport is all about nature’s beauty.
Cave Point is famous for the limestone formations and beautiful scenery. People flock to the small town park to stand on the edge and look down at the huge waves that Lake Michigan can produce. These waves push up through small caverns within the rocks and create geysers lining the hiking trails on the water.
Whitefish Dunes is also hosting the Candlelight Walk on Aug. 21. Candles line a walkway that runs on the shores of Lake Michigan. Family friendly or romantic get away, there is a way for everyone to enjoy the beauty of Door County at night.
Jacksonport is probably most well known for the Annual “Polar Bear Plunge” happening on New Year’s Day. Feeling brave? People from all over fill up this regularly quiet town to wade thru icebergs to say they took the “polar bear plunge”. Only in Wisconsin do people willingly walk or run into water hovering around the freezing point. In 2008, there were people from 25 states and 3 countries to participate. You better believe that this is one great way to start the year off right! It’s such a big deal that the event published a list of helpful hints to ensure that your dip into the icy lake is the most pleasant running into ice bergs can be. To see these hints and all other information about the plunge go to http://doorbell.net/pbc/.

In 2006, a film crew was present to shoot footage that will be included in the new movie “Feed The Fish” to expose what life is like in Door County in the winter.
Valmy, another small village just south of Jacksonport hosts the 27th Annual Valmy Thresheree & Antique Machinery Show on August 20-22. Come check out what life used to be like featuring a chainsaw competition, country music, tractor pull, polka, and horse pull. Antique machinery parade and the famous mud pig wrestling competition finish out the weekend. Admission is only $5 for the weekend.
Glidden Lodge Beach Resort is located just south of Jacksonport on the shores of Lake Michigan. It is truly off the beaten path and remains one of the best kept secrets in Door County. Glidden Lodge Beach Resort is a beautiful and secluded resort with some of the best water views around. For your convenience, there is a restaurant on site serving dinner nightly.
